If you are trying to do this on the cheap there are two areas you might
consider investigating on your w2k box. First I would look at the
network settings, tcp/ip, options, advanced, ip filtering. Here you can
define what traffic is allowed and to and from the machine. Secondly
you could use local policy on to enforce access control via ip/sec
policy. Both these means can work fine.

Firewall stateful inspection is quite overrated since most compromises
IMHO are directed at the application layer of which the firewall itself
has precious little idea what is going on. Port filtering is 90%.

If you are looking for an elcheapo firewall I would check out
www.astaro.com which is a good free firewall you can put on any pc. I
am not a Linux guy, but it was very easy to set up and get working. All
one needs is a beater pc.

Anybody have any Firewall recommendations for a Win2000 server?

Kerio has been recommended to me.

I was wondering if other people have had good experiences with other
packages.

Zone Alarm is a no no as this piece of the server is remotely maintained
and
when you run Zone, it shuts the pc off from the world initially.
