the JVM settings really depend on your app(s) and load and such.  We
run about 15 apps on a server available to 20k employees.  the server
is a quad p4.  these settings work for us.

-XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:PermSize=64m -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:NewSize=48m

IIRC, if you have a single proc, don't use -XX:+UseParallelGC.  I
could be recollecting wrong though.  Its all in those blog entries by
Robi Sen and Pete Frietag..oh and Steven Erat at Talkingtree.com too.

also, set your min/max heap the same.  example
-Xms512m -Xmx512m
