We are having a problem with our MS SQL server. We have a script that
detect whether or not CF can connect to the SQL server and if it can't
connect, SQL server is restarted. This happens _a_lot_ (like 20+ times
per day-- I had to change the logging settings to find out) and we are
thinking of killing the function just so the sql server stops
restarting so much.

The reason that the script is there is that SQL server has this
tendency to switch to single user mode and when that happens, CF is
frequently unable to connect.

I have a theory that this is being caused by the CF app. You see, the
app gets about 35 deadlocks per day. The restarts don't coincide with
the deadlocks and are frequently 20-40 minutes after a group of
deadlocks. (The deadlocks and the restarts frequently come in groups.)
We can't figure out why SQL server keeps switching to single user
mode, but it seems feasible to me that SQL server notices the number
of deadlocks and attempts to protect against the deadlocks by
switching to single user mode.

Anyway, I know that we should eliminate the deadlocks and I am working
on that but it seems that I'm the only person who is interested in
eliminating the deadlocks. Everyone else just accepts that this is
normal for the app.Unfortunately, the SQL server problem is
interfering with my ability to fix the deadlock problems. (And keeping
me from fixing the problem that I was actually assignd to fix.)

Has anone else ever seen a SQL server behaving like this? Do you think
that the frequent deadlocks could be the problem? Should I take the
server out back and shoot it?

Wait, I already know the answer to that last one....
