Well in my opinion, clients aren't more involved as IT people because it's
simply not their job 99% of the time. Do you really think someone like a
customer service rep or manager wants to be doing what we do? If they did,
they'd be doing it. They don't want to spend the time on it because it's
not the focus of their job. I'm sure I could do all of my own plumbing, but
do I really have the time or want to learn how? Maybe a few simple things,
but I won't be putting a half-bath in my house on my own, any time soon.

I've learned that trying to explain something technical to someone who just
simply doesn't want to THINK about the technical aspect is just a plain
waste of time. I think a good deal of this business (unless you are wedged
into some corner cubicle all the time), is interacting with the clients in
ways THEY understand, not in ways we normally would think. It keeps you
pretty sharp, like trying to explain complex things to children (well, not
how to program a VCR) in a way they can grasp.

Of course, it's easy to get frustrated and want to scream "NO NO, THAT'S NOT
WHAT I MEAN!", or something far more colorful, but hopefully you get the
picture!
