Can you not just mark it as READ and highlight it with a colour as part of the message rule? That way the new message notification should ignore it, but when you come to look at CFTalk you should be able to see what's new and remove the highlighting. I must confess I've never tried this though..... (Obsessive compulsive too! And Tony is right...
