Yes, that is good SOP for changing any config file.

Mmm... I didn;t pursue it any further when I ran into the problem with  
the CLI failing with any Java-related commands.

Does that mean that with the Updater already installed:

  1)  CF Admin settings show 1.4.1 ans the JVM?

  2)  CF is able to javac compile new class files?

If so, I wonder why the CLI Java doesn't work

Didn't mean to lean on you -- I just realized that I had posted  
privately, and wanted other members of the list to be aware of the  
problems -- I don't think this is a Macromedia Problem -- In the Apple  
beta of 1.4.1 CFMX Standalone, CFMXJ2EE and JRun would all pick up the  
1.4.1 correctly (even though they wouldn't work with 1.4.1 due to other  
problems with the Apple beta).  Apple must have done something to  
change the interface in the released version of 1.4.1.
