Yes, yes yes.
Doesn't answer the question though. There is a process in the background which 
runs off to MM to ask if I'm valid or not every so often. What happens if 
that doesn't/can not occur ?

It shouldn't be taken lightly on a dekstop !

I wouldn't expect MM to support weird combinations of O/S and J2EE.
