FYI Jerry, you can view multiple documents at the same time in jEdit in split views - even supports syntax highlighting for different languages in split views.
There's also a jDiff plugin that allows you to compare two files in the same view and it sets alerts in the buffer for each area that's different. I'm pretty sure its argued in Code Complete or a similar book that programmers should master one editor and use that editor for everything.
