The sales person is making a fool of themselves as well as your company in front of the client or potential client if this is the practice that is condoned where you work. They should be a bit more professional and/or diplomatic in their response. Calling a developer directly who is unprepared to respond can literally kill the deal. The consulting company I used to work for use to include developers in their sales pitch, with the developer having a full understanding of the project, and going over the project with the sales rep before the meeting with the client. Of course our sales people use to love to say, "We can do anything you want", which use to irk me a bit because it is just not that simple sometimes.

Tony,

No, I don't think you're crazy at all. The salesperson should have a
deep understanding on what can and can not be done, and should consult
you (the developer) in the event that they do not have the answer to a
question. They should pose that question to you away from the client.

But, we don't live in a perfect world do we? Especially on the Eastern
Shore (translation for the uninitiated: Technological Backwater).
