The person with the standard answer had the right idea.
You may want to introduce the salesperson the handy "mute" button on the
phone which allows you and he to talk w/o them hearing anything. ( Most
phones have one; at least I thought they did )
I have rarely been on a sales call like this. I know at one point ( back
when I had a real job ) a sales person planned a call with a tech guy;
dropped out to do something else at the last minute and told the tech guy
to handle the sales call.
The tech guy said something along the lines of:
"I'm sorry, I do not have enough information to help you. I do not know
why sales guy doesn't have time for you. You'll have to take that up with
him; would you like me to forward you to his voicemail?"
Needless to say, I do not think that happened again. The most enjoyable
two "week" of that job was when they started having me review proposals
before sending them to clients. I marked about a dozen things as
"impossible in that budget."
