Verity. I update the DB daily from data in another system and use the Update
action to do so when I add or change records. I am having no issues with
search response times, just the update response times.
It appears from this conversation that I'd be better off refreshing after all
of the modifications are complete or at least optimizing after the database
updates are completed.

No one implied throwing it on the scrap heap. If you read the whole
thread you will see that the person tried Verity first and wasn't happy
with its performance. Only then were they looking for another solution.
