Yes, Opterons are just as 32bit friendly as the Athlon64's, you just get
more ooph, especially in terms of I/O.  But do not even consider
installing Windows "64bit" editions as they are still compiled almost
totally in 32bit, which can cause bottlenecks and basically becomes not
worth the hassle and expense.  If you want 64bit then go Linux,
otherwise just stick to 32bit Windows.

Be careful though, you really need to do a lot of research into the
motherboards and addon cards you intend getting in order to not end up
with junk, a lot of Opteron multi-processor board manufacturers cut
corners to make them cheaper.
