My guess would be that he intentionally went to a site specifically designed to exploit his particular software configuration. More to the point, I bet he artificially created that software environment rather than using the same one he usually uses to surf the Internet. The very last paragraph is probably the most telling (I hate when writers hide all the qualifications at the end): "Note that the latest version of Internet Explorer, as patched by Windows XP Service Pack 2, is not vulnerable to the installations shown in my video and discussed above." As I said in a previous e-mail, I suspect that the primary culprit is free software downloaded on the Internet. You'd be surprised (at least I was) how many people have downloaded gambling software. Every family computer has at least one (usually several) file sharing apps. Online games are a huge source too. Again, I have absolutely no hard evidence of this. I wouldn't even know how to go about collecting it. I have been working in an ISP and computer sales/repair shop for years. I can definitely say that a combination of Firefox, realtime Spy-bot and Adware (we've been installing all three of these on customers computers for some time) is not enough. If you know of some real statistics on the most common sources of spyware and adware, I'd be interested in seeing them. Artificial test cases just tell us possible sources.
