Rick,

This won't do too much to help I'm afraid, but I use FTP Voyager's
Secure FTP feature to make a hopefully-secure, encrypted connection to
my server, where the password is set to be delivered as a hash. Plus
my FTP server -- Serv-U -- is set to establish secure connections in
the first place, and it is set to expect the password to come in as a
hash.

US$90 for the server component and US$50 for each FTP client. Not
where you want to be, I know. Also its something your typical
brainless user, which I think is your target here, isn't going to be
able to easily set up. Maybe another client is easier. FTPV can do
it fine but its not just click-and-go to start.
