An interesting thread...
The truth is, a single defined application can take one person 1 hour to
accomplish, and another one 20 hours to accomplish, and the rates that each
person charges will vary by geography, demand, confidence in price
sensitivity, etc.
Amazingly enough, there is no way to determine whether the 1 hour job will
be better or worse than the 20 hour job, and price doesn't always correlate
with quality.
A friend of mine once shared the following cool goodie with me;
"Pick any two: good, fast, cheap"
Implying that you could NEVER get all three. Over the years, I've discovered
that to be a true-ism for the most part (there are exceptions), both in what
my company can produce, and what I can get from vendors or employees.
When bidding on a job, we've had people say, "but so and so said he can do
it for less", and I welcome them to try it.. Sometimes it works and
sometimes it doesn't.. Development companies (with higher overhead) tend to
charge more, but you get more too.. You get a stable company (hopefully!)
that will be around to support the product, make suggestions that make sense
because they have a large brainpool to feed off of, and also a company that
has a higher ability to be responsible for when things go wrong (and
sometimes things go wrong)..
My two cents (maybe your 10.00.. ).. grin..
