Most affiliates do as you suggest - payment every month, but only if
the balance is over $x (e.g. $100 for Google adsense).

As fro reporting, this is usually done in a few ways:

1) As you currently offer, over a date range
2) Reports by URL (so thay can see what pages generate most clicks)
3) Reports by channel (if you have implemented channels for their content)
4) etc
