I can give you a specific example. I undertook a private pro-bono
project for the volunteer radio station I have my show on, about the same
time as a friend in the USA did a similar thing. He and a colleague took
two years to build their station's site, http://wamu.org which has about
the same level of complexity as my station's site, http://hawkradio.org.au
which I built in 74 hours, spread over 3 months.

I think they've got a better looking site, because they've got much better
creative skills and my revised Hawkradio site is going to be much better,
but the complexity and server-side stuff is about the same. After we
discovered we'd finished almost equivalent sites at the same time, we shared
our spec documents, and the specs are almost the same.

The point is this .... their PHP site, using "free" PHP took two of them two
years to do. Multiply that out by an hourly rate, and compare that to my
building almost the same site (from a programming standpoint) in 74 hours.
Even if you add the cost of the server, mine still came out at a fraction of
the cost.

Both stations are lucky we're going the work on a volunteer basis!
