Hi Rick, I'm using CF MX 6.1 with DW MX 2004. I've not had any problems at all.
DW is great for CSS and the site templates save me days of slogging. As for clean code, I'd say DW creates very clean code and I've never had any issues with it changing code or case unexpectedly. I would personally dread going back to hand coding everything, but a combination of hand coding within DW and the DW gui works just fine for me. I also find the DW CF integration very good and a huge time saver. Using a combination of CSS, DW templates and cfincludes, even larger sites can be put together rapidly and with a consitancy in appearance. And making site wide changes to style and functionality is also extremely simple. I have no formal training in programming or site design, but I find that the comination of software I am using has lead me to develop well structured applications that are modular, thus making it easy to re-use code from one site to another. I've been giving CSS a go, but I'll tell you, I found it to be too laborious trying to figure out how to make everything work at all, then trying to figure out all the hacks for different browsers, etc. I joined the CSS-discuss list, which is a lot like this one, but most of the time those guys were talking about how to make something work with Opera or others browsers which I don't really care to cater to. Don't know how good it'll be, but MS has a Expressions Web Designer in beta that I've looked at. It's supposed to provide automated CSS layout. Didn't try it... I was just trying to figure out if I wanted to bother with ASP.Net 2.0... I hand code everything. And I'm not trying to sound snobby when I say that, really, I just have never found a good enough tool that creates easily maintainable, clean html code. They all add in shims that are nearly impossible to deal with maintenance-wise, unrecognizable image names, the list goes on. Most code generators also create quite un-search engine friendly code, which is a huge part of our business. I can't tell you how many sites we've basically rewritten that were created with CS, DW, and ::shudder:: FrontPage. Also, we're creating more and more CSS-based layouts, which, as far as I know isn't something that code generators have figured out how to do yet.
