I've been using the MX versions for nearly three years now, and I have yet to need to look at any part of the Java underpinnings of ColdFusion. I just use the standard Jrun that comes with ColdFusion and run the installer. I have started to use multi-home which has been fun, and required me to know a little more about the Java world. I'm also diving into flex, which brings more Java pains.
