Frankly what cost? The developer's version is free, you can get shared hosting 
for as cheap as $8/month. If its a non-commercial site you can use the basic 
Blue Dragon server for free. If you need something more, the full Blue Dragon 
server is still less than $1000. CF Standard isn't much more.

Moreover given how fast development is with CF, you can still buy CF Standard, 
for instance, and still come in cheaper than an equivalent site done in asp.net 
or php.

So basically these days the cost argument is quite frankly pure crap.
