I appreciate the advice Jordan, but at this point it would be even more counter productive to hire additional people. This business has traditionally been a windows shop. We run several CF sites, all of them are on Windows with the exceptions of this one which we moved to Linux a couple years ago as a test. Basically we had a tech at the time who knew a lot about Linux and talked our CIO in to investing in Linux web servers for the sole purpose of saving money on Windows Server OS licenses. The thought was that it would be cheaper to not have to pay for Windows. Well, Linux has been a perfectly capable and stable platform, but it has not achieved its original goal. That original tech I mentioned is no longer in this department, and the remaining techs know little to nothing about Linux. This has caused greater turn around time in configuration changes and necessitated contractors coming in to help us in the past. Also, the set-up is a bit more time consuming. For instances, every time we add a new file server, we have to set up a new mnt drive on each box to facilitate access to the server. This would not be a problem with windows. There are additional bugs in cfdocument found only on Linux installs of CF which have never been fixed. The current CF installs on Linux run under nobody and that is a security concern. It is more difficult to control who can manage the servers, since the rest of our network all uses NT authentication, but you have to go bumming around the root password for the Linux boxes to fix anything.
Now, that being said I am VERY aware that SOME of those issues have very good answers to them. My point is, due the collective lack of Linux at MY particular business we have actually created MORE maintenance headaches and cost ourselves MORE money then if we had stuck with Windows in the first place. The rest of our sites are already on windows boxes, but as much as I have started to like Linux I would still rather be consistent and use one or the other. Hiring a consultant costs far more than the Windows licenses we were trying to avoid in the first place. The Linux to Windows conversion I am not too worried about. The stuff I am looking for information on is CF enterprise, multiple instances, and sharing sessions across servers etc. ~Brad >Brad Wood wrote: >> Well, my work is taking a big leap with our servers.
