But what if you don't have access to the server? It amazes me the amount of
people who throw out suggestions like "change it in the server config"
without realizing that only a small percentage of people have access to
change that sort of thing. What about people on virtual hosts? Or people who
don't know HOW to do it?

Of course you're not "tied" to an extension in any case - it's trivial to
assign any extension you like to any engine you like.  The defaults are just
that: defaults.

You can easily change ColdFusion pages to use a ".PHP" (or ".HTML" or
".MyFreakinPages" or whatever) extension if you like.
