More food for thought... I don't don't know what OS you are using, but you may want to limit how many files are stored in a single folder.
I installed a helpdesk ticketing system on Windows that stored attachments in a single folder. The folder now contains 10's of thousands of files and is painfully slow to work with via Windows Explorer and makes maintenance a real pain.
