What I had said to original poster, I'll say out-loud now.
Build the application in all text, and farm out some graphic design
to a graphic designer. For the cheap route, look for a college
student majoring in graphic design.
I have done my best work where I'm part of a team (Hey, who hasn't?).
The team has typically consisted of a graphic artist, a programmer (me),
and an HTML expert.
Most of the problems I've had were with the 'account reps' who had
a graphic design developed (and approved by client) before discussing
the functionality of the app with the coders.
