You can't send anything back to the user until all the photos are uploaded, but once that's done, you can just leave them on disk, record the fact that they're there in session scope, and return a response after kicking off a background thread to process the images. That background thread should update the same session scope data structures, which you can interrogate via Ajax requests to update the user on progress.
