I prefer building my own as well. I've found that the low- and mid-range systems tend to be cheaper if you buy a brand (you'll be locked in, but those systems probably don't have a lot of shelf life anyways), but for the high end, you can get some serious bang for your buck building your own - I recently built a screamer (7.6 WEI) for $1500 (SSD, 4 1TB drives in RAID 10, 8GB Corsair memory, i7 2600K) - I bought it at MicroCenter, and probably could have shaved off a couple hundred bucks if I gone with NewEgg.
