Forgive the off-topic diversion into hardware, but I'm sure many of you
have faced this same situation.
The subject:
Compaq Proliant 6000
1x PII Xeon 400Mhz 512k, 256mb Ram
Oracle 8.0.5 on NT4SP6
This is a beefy box that I just spent $160 on to get a redundant power
supply for. Array controller, hot-swap drives, etc... Looking at the
invoice it was about $15k new...not that that means anything now...
While the PII Xeon 400/512's are reasonably priced (<$100) the actual
compaq kits are not ($1700!). However, I did find someone who would sell
the Compaq Xeon Kit wit processor (you need the tray, heat pipe/sink, vrm,
etc) for $455.
So the question really is, do I spend $1500 to get 3 more processors and
throw some more memory in it (probably up to a gig) or just buy another
machine?
OR (to put it another way)
Will Quad Xeon 400's be faster or slower than say Dual PIII-866's?
(Uprading to Win2kAS in the process)
