Personally, I learned by creating an application to design and build a
bookstore online.

If you could find a hobby or other fun site (family tree) to work on I think
you will learn quickly.

Having the books on hand is great, but staying up all night and watching
your code work is the best way to learn.

You can reply to me directly if you want anymore ideas on getting started.
I am a Cold Fusion Teacher at the Colorado Institute of Art so I work with
non-technical students and help them to start from scratch and create a full
blown application by the end of the quarter.
