Anyone know when the first Procedural Programming language was out? How about the first OO language? Most s-called Object Oriented Languages of today (C++, Java) are actually hybrid languages, taking elements from both procedural and OO languages. Smalltalk was developed by Alan Key at Xerox PARC in the early 1970s (Programming Languages: Structures and Models by Herbert Dershem and Michael Jipping) page 9. The same book states that FORTRAN was developed in 1954 and COBOL 'in the 1950s'. The book also states that Smalltalk is distinguished by it's strict use of the object oriented model, but it doesn't state whether that model existed prior to the language. Based in this, I guess it would be correct to state that Procedural programming came about two decades before OO programming. >It's worth >noting that, from a CS point of view (and I'm not a CS grad, so you'll have >to take this with a grain of salt) there haven't really been too many >innovations in the core concepts of programming for a very long time. I also believe that to be true (And I am a CS grad ) I better go do some work before the day is over. -- Jeffry Houser | mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Need a Web Developer? Contact me!
