If it turns out there is a need for client variables, do use a DB (if
you didn't know that already).

ALSO, I'd suggest that you now compact/defrag your registry, as that
client management will leave huge, gaping holes in the registry once
you switch over to DB storage (or after disable client management
altogether). Client management-abused registries can be HUGE, filled
with holes, and can cause performance problems and odd registry
errors.

My production server's registry went from >250 MB down to 12MB.

Oh, BTW, there are registry compaction/defragmentation utitities to be
found on the Web.
