Sounds like the installer is not compatible with Vista. You could try:

a) Installing it on a non-vista machine then transferring files and reg keys
over (dodgy)
b) J2EE deployment - creating a package from a working copy and installing
it on a J2EE server
c) Looking up issues with new Vista dlls/mfcs and try to find a workaround

It's pretty normal for CF only to work on 50% of installations anyway (from
my "unusual" experiences) - even if the installer works you might have to
spend hours stuffing around with config files to get it working as it
should.

Yes I am getting cynical.. Now if I can only remember where I put that free
copy of Visual studio..

By the way I think it's great that you're trying this out and telling us
about it. At least it saves the rest of us a bit of time and trouble.
Sharing is caring, after all.

Andrew,

Ok so let me get this straight. What your implying is:

a) Because I'm trying to do something new/different, I'm not a
serious developer (despite holding that position for the last 8 1/2
years)
b) I didn't use VS/VPC/VMware etc, so I failed to take the smartest
route. Despite already doing this and finding that video performance
was woeful if running remotely. I didn't see the point in mentioning
this as it had nothing to do with my original post.

I do agree with some of the comments you make, like "developers don't
have that much time". But I'm sure I'm not the first developer to get
sick of/frustrated with what they are doing and so find something else
to do as a distraction. Or have a day off work and still use one of
their work notebooks at home to play with beta software.

I do find it hard to believe that despite Vista only being 6 months
(give or take a few months) away, that no one at Adobe/MM has ever
tried installing CF on Vista. I'm not saying your wrong, just that it
is a worry if that is the case.

As I have already found tonight, the comments elsewhere on the net
about the x86 version of the installer not being able to ever complete
on Vista (with or without errors) is completely untrue. I've found
that by dropping the settings back on the installer exe to only run in
256 colour mode, and disable themes etc, that the installer will now
run all the way through (and without any errors). This is exactly the
same bug the installer had when remotely installing on Server 2003 when
it first came out. Doesn't require a patch/updater as long as people
are aware of what the issue is.

That said, I do agree that installing CF with IIS7 with definitely
require a patch (or more than likely, completely new installer) before
it is attempted by anyone not willing/able to get their hands dirty.

Have a good night/morning.

Mark
