Since posting this I've had a talk with the boss and he's agreed to upgrade to CF9, assuming the customer signs off on the cost, if they don't then we drop the whole thing and the customer does something else I suppose.
Anyway, i still have the old WinXP running in VM so I can keep using that for CF7 if I have to while I install CF9 developer on my new Win7 box. So the question is now not so urgent.
