I would take the assumption that these apps are what I would call 'half net' apps - 
i.e the client is no longer thin, but data is centralised online...

So we can make the assumption that the user had to be online to leverage the full 
power of the app?

If that is the case - you can assign a serial number to each product (come up with 
your own algorithm) and periodically send it from client to yourself, or failing that, 
send it along with every hit to the centralised server. 

Then validate, and continue.. or say it is blocked and go on your merry way.

If it fails - you can then send back to the client 'gimme all the info you can' or 
somesuch, and it can grab you IP, whatever details they have put into the app etc.

And then - if you are able, freeze the app.

Variety of options.

Of course, if totally offline - you have the standard stuff - and good luck with that!

But th e simple act of having to utilise the net means software validation is not 
hard to set up, and a fair bit harder to dodge for your average user.
