Open your PC up. There is a cable (usually red and black) running from the little speaker in your case to the motherboard. Just pull it out of the motherboard. That's it.

I like a quiet PC.

My new PC has Win2000 Professional.

I stepped through all the sounds under Sounds And Multimedia and selected
none on all (including defaults)

I then tried No Sounds schema.

But still it beeps e.g. when a "retry" dialogue box comes up (e.g. to
refresh a page with a form). I find this extremely annoying.

Ideally, I'd like the PC to either be quiet except for when a new email
arrives, or entirely quiet.

Is the only certain way to disconnect the speaker wire ?
