This I would imagine has more to do with the cfmx runtime package written by macromedia and not a limitation of java itself. Blue dragon has managed to write a java cf implementation that can do just that - run java code, packaged as war files, on any platform, without the need for the cf engine. Java has always been designed with the exception of some JNI classes to be run on any platform. Creating remote paths is fraught with peril - portability is the first thing that disappears. That said it would really depend on how the third party API was written as to whether it would be possible to use RMI or EJB. RMI would be the easiest.
