> I'd like them to be indexed

Create a table in a database that has columns for each of the fields you
want from the XML document as well as a path of some kind (either filepath
or URL) for the actual file itself.

Load each document and parse off the information you need using your
favourite XML DOM parser (the one in CFMX should be fine).

Create an entry in the above-mentioned table for each "record" that you
have parsed.

Create a Verity collection that is populated from a query against the
above-mentioned table.

You could then have a background process that looked for "new" or
"changed" files and simply re-index portions of the Verity collection to
keep everything in sync.

> ... and then query the collection with XPath or similiar.

Use <CFSEARCH> against the above-mentioned Verity collection. Use the
embedded filepath or URL to obtain the actual document.

XPath will only make sense as a searching mechanism if you have
hierarchical data.

>From the example you gave, it sounds as though the data is fairly "flat"
(ie. each XML file has one Author and one Category).

If this is not the case, and you required much more flexible/complex
hierarchical searching, I don't think there are any tools out there that
do this type of indexing.

The other thing you could do is simply combin all the XML files into one
BIG XML document and just using XPath on that. That is really what XPath
is for - searching an XML file with many records and multiple hierarchies.
