As you are no doubt already aware MXDU 2004 will be held at Star City
Casino in Pyrmont.

I've been watching the news of late and see many (nasty) things happening
in and around this venue. I'm not ususually surprised (it's Sydney after
all) however is it the ideal/safest place for MXDU?

The latest incident was a drive by shooting, they've had disgruntled
gamblers drive their cars into the lobby, drug busts in the hotel, what
next?

No doubt you are referring to last nights beat-up on the national news -- a slow news night. A quick google at: http://news.google.com/news?q=star+city+casino clearly shows how dated last nights reports beyond the shooting were.

The StarCity complex is a virtual metropolis of shops, nightclubs, restaurants, bars, showrooms, hotels, apartments and of course several casinos. Its unfortunate that there was a lunatic on the street but it's not something that can really be attributed to the StarCity complex itself. Nightclubs per se tend to attract some darker elements.

StarCity is not a "shady part of town" inundated with drive-by shootings and drug addicts. StarCity is a show piece entertainment venue for Sydney, adjoining Darling Harbour. For what its worth, security at all StarCity facilities is *extremely* high, and the conference centre is isolated on a level by itself within the hotel tower.

I trust that allays fears about the MXDU venue. It would be very disappointing if folks decided not to attend based on the belief that it was somehow unsafe. The venue is magnificent -- perhaps the best in Sydney for a conference of this type.
