yeah get them to define that ... one thing that our provider gives us is access in their 'staging room' where you can be patched into your rack via their supplied computer or via a laptop etc.  This is free

This is great for bandwidth intensive stuff like installing software via ssh/terminal services as you don't pay for it patched directly like this.  You also get to insert the CD(s) for nothing.

I'm in Sydney CBD.

The cost of access to the building is one thing that really worries me. He did say on the phone that they'd give me occasional access for free. But i dont know how occasional "occasional" is!

Er yeah that is expensive...

Where are you Gavin?  Anyone in Melbourne check out www.globalcenter.com.au

I forget the 3 RU cost (their minimum), but call them for a quote, but either way it's $180/hr and you can call them on the way there and they'll have a keyboard and monitor plugged in for when you arrive.  And if you're quick in and out they often won't bill at all (eg. if you're just installing something and it's 15 minutes). For no money they'll powercycle etc over the phone.  Security is excellent and the service and reliabilty are amazing.

1 RU is about 1/4 the height of a standard desktop PC - not tower - flat case. Around 1" or so.

It sounds a bit expensive to me.

Subject: [cfaussie] Co-location hosting

Hi all,

I'm about to sign on the dotted line to pay $156 per month plus $200 for one Rack Unit of space with 1GB downloads/ 10GB uploads.  (excluding GST).

Standard Access (2 days notice) Hourly - $300
Emergency Access (2 hrs notice) Hourly $540
Is this a good price? Can anyone recommend anything better? Is there anything I should look out for with co-location hosting?

Thanks a lot

Gavin
