I sat for CF5 certification a couple of years ago. The reason I did this was to force myself to become familiar with the whole CF toolset. I came to CF as a database guy, and therefore only used cfquery, cfloop etc day to day. I used CFBuster as the study tool, and that really exposed me to structures, arrays etc and other things that I hadn't used much, if at all.
I still don't use them much, but I know they are there now! In short, I had about 12-18months CF experience, but only in a subset of CF, and the certification process exposed me to a lot more that the product had to offer. It does have an effect on prospective employers. And really how much time will you be investing? I studied for the exam the night before and took a few cfbuster practice exams and thats it. For anyone using CFMX day in day out as I have for the last year and CF for the previous 5 years the exam is not that hard. If you are new to CF I wouldn't sit it till you have used the product for at least a year extensively as the exam covers quite a lot of assumed knowledge. The exam cost is tax deductible (as is buying the study guide). So really what do you have to lose? If the certification helps just once in getting that dream job it has to be worth it. But that is just my opinion.
