I've used it in the early stages (I was an offical green encoder ring, GMC beta tester for Flex...we are an er33t few and we have [EMAIL PROTECTED]@), sadly though not at the moment unless I play around locally on my own (which i do a lot of, making that million dollar hairbrained project that i never end up finishing).Just a quickie - Has anybody played with Flex? Is it as spiffy as it looks in the Demo's? Does it in fact do useful things? Does anybody know where I can download the demo to play with it?
But yes, I'd consider myself a "Flex Coder" so much so i've registered the domain flexcoder.com hehheeh :)
Having been out of touch for a while when one of our product guys asked if anybody had played with Flex I went 'WTF?' and went and looked at the demo's and it looks spiffy as hell and I want to play with it - but (possibly due to the whole I'm an idiot thing) I can't find anywhere to download the beta? I found a buy a CD and have it mailed to you link - but I have moral objections to paying for a beta product at the best of times - especially when I then have to a) pay for it b) wait for the damn thing to show up.
To be frank (you can be agnus), i thik the mail ordering probably was setup to seperate the tire kickers from the actual interested people.
Flex in itself has a heaps of capabilities from a developer point of view. At the present moment, my team here are basically re-factoring FLEX into a DHTML concept, in that we are taking the FLEX concept head-on and making a DHTML/CFMX version (throw in a bit of Blackstone rip offs) of its basics so that we can have the luxury of using a UI (tag based xml packet thingy) to render our UI without having to get our hands dirty with HTML.
In a nutshell, we are wasting a truck load of development man hours to do something that in many ways is done for us. This to me is why FLEX does work it allows you to focus on the backend side of things and less on the inner workings on the UI. There are so many things we take for granted day in day out ie combining controls to talk to one another (eg textfield updates a combobox etc), initialization screens, progress meters and so forth. Flex does this and more and you can change these if need be.
So if you are considering it, and feel that a postage costs are a bit "ummm no thankyou" i urge you to atleast re-consider that thought.. steal your bosses wallet and say its for new pens?.
There are also the initial costs of FLEX. If your a hosting style provider or intranet house, well yeah, your gonna get cained financially for 12k is a hard price to swallow ASP wise. If you have an OEM setup, the pricing starts getting attractive and throw in the word "government or education" (which we can) and you start winding a few screws into people like [EMAIL PROTECTED] (hehehehe) and they in return get smaller pay packets..its true, eventually if we all bought FLEX, mark would have to start paying us? hehehe.
If i had my way, and one day I WILL damn it, FLEX will be my UI and CFMX will be my Model. I'd love to work on a project that not only uses FLEX,CFMX but also Flash Communication Server. I'd die a happy geek... it'd suck to die, but you get my meaning....
Talk to either Mark or the RocketBoots crew about FLEX, while they may sound like Salesman, they do understand that it can solve solutions to problems you may have, and they won't (better not guys!!! hehe..so far they have shown integrity..except Andrew, he's a shifty one..never trust a man who has a new house with killer entertainment systems..heh joking.) twist your arm into buying it for the sake of buying it. Pretty level guys, but don't tell em i said that...oh shit this is a list....doh!
I'd love to be using it now for this project as it would solve a lot of my headaches... but if life were a straight forward easy thing, i'd be rich and surrounded by supermodels awaiting my every request.. fact is, i'm poor and my wife will kill me if she saw this email :D
Scott
Anybody know where I can get hold of it?
Appologies if this is a dead topic that everybodies talked about previously - I unsubscribed from all my dev lists to try and cut down the 50mb a day mail problem pending a better spam solution - Gmail having come to my rescue I've only just resubscribed, I trawled the archives but couldn't find anything?
Cheers
