Yup, all the time.

I use component diagrams a lot, class diagrams (which are part of UML,
Adam), collaboration diagrams and the rest occasionally. I think I've
used all nine of the basic UML diagrams at some point. I find it very
helpful, both to clarify my own thoughts and to explain things to
other people (both technical and non-technical).

Actors are usually people so stick figures seem appropriate. You can
always specify a <<stereotype>> to clarify the meaning.
