Hi Nathan,
If you are a sole trader or in a partnership, do you have to pay super?
As far as I know super is compulsory - if someone dosn't pay it for you,
you'll have to pay it. Ask your accountant if you want to go down the
contractor path you'll need one anyway. Don't forget about workers
compensation as well even though it's not too expensive it's yet more paper
work.
I had not considered professional indemnity/public liability insurance
cover. What level of cover would be acceptable? How much does it cost?
Having just gone through obtaining this it's a) a right pain getting a
reasonable quote b) huge amount of paper work c) it's going to be more
expensive than you think. To get adequate cover it going to be roughly
$2K/yr minimum - contact me off list if you want all the details.
Personally I think if you're even in the situation that you actually need
to use it you'll be stuffed anyway - but a a fair amount of work requires
that you need it these days.
Do you really have to be prepared to travel around Australia if you want
to be a contractor?
Not in my experience. (I'm Sydney based). Been a contractor for 8 or so
years and not been out of work once. (Not to say that's it's been the gravy
train all the way, you do need to put away money when times are good). I
tend to do small (few weeks to a month) to medium term projects (6 months
or so) and usually have several projects running at the same time. On a few
occasions I've taken short term (< week) contracts out of Sydney because
the work was interesting.
If you go down the contractor path you'll find you'll get much more varied
and interesting work and if you're lucky can pick and choose what sort of
work you do and the hours you work. The money may or may not be better
(even if you get a higher hourly rate because of all the hidden costs of
being a contractor eg insurance, no sick leave or holiday pay, paying your
own super, accountant fees, paying for your own software+ hardware, paying
for your own training, only being paid the hours you work etc etc) until
you get a few years under your belt. But then the worse case is if it
doesn't work out you can always go back to a full time job ;-)
