Pro for contracting: You often can command a higher price than if you were a permanent employee.
Con for contracting: You don't have a dependable income, since you can't guarantee stepping from one contract into the next. There's often a lag between jobs, and that can get annoying - it's depressing to have money but still need to act like you're broke so that the money is saved against the lean times. But maybe that's just me. And super should always be a priority. My dad's recently had to retire due to ill health, and I've gotten to see the result of having no super plan. My 2c.
