bit more romantic and go for the steak dinner...

It's called prop-work, and it's the bane of the industry.  Company
asks 5 dev-houses for proposals so they can define their project
before going overseas for development.   Ideally, you take about 2 to
4 hours defining the basic costs attributed tyo assumptions, and then
charge for a definition / scoping phase where you confirm your
assumptions.  You have to communicate it such that they realize they
are getting value for the Intellectual Property they are buying.  Hard
to get them to accept the idea of paying for ideas.  Nike swoosh takes
me 10 seconds to draw, worth millions.
