Well Claude, you'd have to think so.
There have been no announcements from Macromedia about sales successes, that you'd expect to see if they were selling new servers. I'm getting sick of hearing from all sorts of site owners that they're either in the process of changing to some other technology, or have decided not to do any more apps in ColdFusion.
There are very few contract or full time jobs in ColdFusion in Sydney at the moment. I just had a recruiter tell me he knew of only two jobs in ColdFusion in Sydney, and the one we were talking about was at a site where they had a team of CF Developers, but they were going to change away from CF to .asp in the next few years. The job will be maintenance only.
I am still looking for some kind of reassurance from Macromedia that ColdFusion is an ongoing technology. When you raise it with a Macromedia person, you get protests that they're working as hard as they can to sell the servers, but if they're actually selling any, where are they going? As far as I can see nowhere but in existing CF sites.
Where are the new installations?? If there were any new installations wouldnt it be a good idea to tell some people about it, so we can at least try to convince managers of existing sites like the manager of the data centre you mention that they arent going to be stuck with orphan technology.
I'm still looking for CF contract work in Sydney and there just isnt any, as far as I can see.
Claude, I fear you might be right.
Or else perhaps Macromedia might like to chip in here and reassure us. Not just with platitudes and motherhood statements, but with some facts. WHO is moving TO Cold Fusion???? Anyone? Mark Blair, where are all these servers going to say you're selling? Show us they're not just going to upgrade existing CF5 sites.
Cheers

The following are were comments made by a data centre in Melbourne when I asked if they were able to have cf server running on their clients servers.
"Cold fusion is a very expensive piece of software to purchase! Not many people use it anymore as it has been superseded by Java, PHP, and on the Windows side - ASP."
"we could install it, but you guys would be pretty lonely out there running it! Some ISPs still run a copy, but it is a bit like VHS cassette tapes in terms of technology now a days."
"It is quite expensive and apart from some activity a few years ago we rarely see it in use nowadays. PHP and Java seemed to have killed it in our observations across 450 servers."
