You're not actually being anal; you are letting an implementation detail
bubble up into the requirements. What you suggested allows for a page to
be served with blog entries sorted in ascending order for example, which
breaks the periodical semantics inherent in a blog. The approach you
describe could be used for the implementation of the requirements.
However, certain combinations of options would have to be disallowed to
retain the periodical semantics.
