No flames, though it should be noted that UML does not have to be used only with OOP, 
there are many diagrams that are useful within any programming paradigm.

I'd recommend coming to grips with UML itself first before moving on to Design 
Patterns, since a lot of the patterns text you'll find incorporates models. UML 
Distilled by Martin Fowler is a good resource book, along with The Elements of UML 
Style by Scott Ambler. The Conallen book is also good, along with UML Explained by 
Kendall Scott and lots of other books. But I guess you asked for online resources...
