Jim was responsible for some proposed extensions to UML that made it 
easier to model web applications. I implemented them in TogetherSoft's

Yes, I use that nowadays but haven't really 'gotten into it' yet. I was 
very used to Together - used that since early '97.

I'm not entirely sure you need to learn patterns first - most patterns 
are described in UML - but you'll much more out of UML if you learn 
some basic OOA/D (object oriented analysis and design).
