Thanks everyone for the quick replies.  I did exactly as you suggested, but
when I run the diagnostics via the arcims admin tool I get a 404.  The
servlet path that it is using is
[mysite]/servlet/com.esri.esrimap?cmd=cmdconnectorping ??  Any thoughts?

jason, when arcIMS asks for servlet, use "other" & install the java to the
location dave's outlined. btw there are detailed instructions posted in the
arcIMS forums on support.esri.com. i've been using this method since mx came
out, works plenty fine.
