As someone who has spent over twenty years building applications in a variety of languages, I've generally found interactive step debuggers to be pretty useless in large scale development. I've nearly always had to resort to logging / dumping data because the debugging overhead is just too high in an interactive system...

While step debuggers aren't the end all be all, they are nevertheless a valuable tool. Certainly in some contexts step debuggers are useless, but I wouldn't say they are useless in all large scale development projects. In fact, I would be willing to bet that step debugging is/was used in in the development of CFMX.
